Share A Sailing Experience Steeped in America's Maritime History...
Nathaniel Bowditch was born in Salem, Massachusetts, 1773, during the great era of sailing vessels. At a very early age, he showed an understanding of math, astonomy, and navigation far beyond his peers ... even those who had been sailing for years. By the time he was 20, Nathaniel had learned 4 different languages so that he could even further pursue his education. He was recognized as the world's most renowned mathematician at that time.
On his first overseas voyage, he took what had been the standard navigational practice (which consisted primarily of "dead reckoning") and added to it a degree of accuracy and cohesion that revolutionized marine navigation through to the present day.
